Generation Of Electricity : Hydroelectric


Everyday person consume water for daily life. Water is the important thing that power us from do some activities. What if water power the electricity to your home. That's called ' Hydroelectric power '. 26% in some countries in the world use Hydroelectric power as a generation of electricity. Water is a renewable energy. It won't finish like a burning coal. To make electricity from water,isn't easy things.Although the system is complex but understanding the system are simple.


This picture above shown is a simple system to understand how hydroelectric power station works. Lets look out the function of the each part.

Intake : It's allow water to enter the gate.
Gate   : Control the amount of the water flows in and out.
Alternator : Generate three phase electricity.
Scrollcase : Water get in the scrollcase to spin the turbine and flow out through draft tube.
Turbine : Rotating part of the alternator to produce electricity.
Transformer : Increase and decrease the amount of voltage.

   How hydroelectric produce electricity.

The staring point of the hydroelectric power station is from dam.The dam collects the water in large amount and the water gain potential energy. when the intake open water,it flows the gate. the gate it adjust to flow water according to the level, when the gate open, the potential energy become kinetic energy when the gate release the water and flows the turbine. The turbine rotate by water flows through the scrollcase. while the turbine rotate,it produce electric current. that electric current is step up into 11KV,66KV or 132KV by transformer. the step up current is now flows through the transmission line

Although hydroelectric power station produce electricity by water,but there's some advantage and disadvantage.

    Advantage : 
  1. Free carbon dioxide
  2. Low cost
  3. Flexibility
  4. Unlimited and long last
  Disadvantage :  
  1. Ecosystem damage 
  2. loss of land
  3. Methane emission
  4. Effect on marine life
